Protecting and Celebrating the River Frome
The River Frome is one of our town’s greatest hidden treasures, full of life, history and potential to make our community stronger and more resilient. The river’s health plays a huge part in how we manage climate challenges like flooding and drought.
When we look after it, we’re protecting not only wildlife, but also our wellbeing and future.
We illustrated Frome’s personal water cycle and even wrote a song, ‘I am the River’.
Our River Vision Project aimed to reconnect people with the river by improving access, inspiring care, and celebrating the wildlife that depends on it.

River Access at Rodden Meadow
In late 2023, we submitted a proposal to Frome Town Council to make an access point to the river so it is easier to enjoy for everyone.
The plan included:
- Accessible paths and seating areas for families, those with additional needs and older residents
- Dog steps leading down to the water to avoid further bank erosion and sediment entering the water
- A riverside viewing platform to enjoy wildlife and nature
We gained the Council’s and communities support, and have handed over a brief to Frome Town Council and Mayday Saxonvale should either wish to create a more accessible site a long the river.

Taking Action for the River Frome
We’re not just talking about change – we’re making it happen. Frome Families for the Future is working closely with local groups and volunteers to turn big ideas into real impact.

Litter-Picking Events
We arrange family litter picks to help clear litter from the river and surrounding areas, like Rodden Meadow, The Dippy and Welshmill.
We encourage small daily actions to make a big difference.

Community Creativity
We built Lumi! A giant otter lantern, for the Frome Light the Night Parade. Lumi enjoyed a staycation in Frome Town Hall and Victoria Park Cafe. We wrote a song and drew residents ‘dreams of the river’.

Local Partnerships & Advocacy
We have worked closely with community groups and organisations across the town including Friends of the River Frome, Frome Town Council and Wessex Water. We met with MPs Sarah Dyke and Anna Sabine to discuss river pollution, local water health, and how policy can better support environmental protection.

Inspiring Local Climate Action
We’re continuing to highlight how individuals, families and local businesses can help protect the River Frome. Together, we’re encouraging polluters to adopt greener practices and promoting community-driven solutions that protect our shared environment.

Why the River Vision Project Matters
By improving access to the river and hosting community events, family activities and nature workshops, we’re creating a vibrant, inclusive space that supports both mental and physical wellbeing.
The River Frome should be a place for everyone — a living classroom, a peaceful escape, and a symbol of what a caring community can achieve together.

In Partnership

The Frome Families for the Future River Vision Project worked in partnership with Edventure Frome and Future Shed between 2023-2026.
Future Shed is part of Green & Healthy Frome – a collaboration between Edventure Frome, Frome Medical Practice and Frome Town Council, funded by the National Lottery’s Climate Action Fund.
We’re proud to have been in residence with the Future Shed and Green & Healthy Frome project, building connections between climate, community and health.
